Forest Legacy Program

Description

The Forest Legacy Program is funded by the Land and Water Conservation Fund and administered by the US Forest Service in partnership with State agencies. It protects forests within state identified legacy areas. Funding is for fee acquisition, conservation easements and associated costs.


Eligibility & Requirements

Priority is given to lands that have scenic or recreational values, riparian areas, important fish and wildlife habitat and high ecological value. Funding is available for up to 75% of the project cost. Requires 25% match with non-federal funds. Matching funds can be through value donated by the landowner, non-federal grant funds, or other non-federal government funding.


Awards

Funds can be substantial for large landscape scale projects. Five million dollars was awarded to establish the Paul C. Jones Working Forest, also known as the Brushy Mountain Project.
